4 Questions I used to help me unlock my “genius zone”

We spend a lot of our time doing tasks and transitioning through routines but do we stop to ask ourselves, “What am I really good at that fulfills me?” Being able to answer this question can help us unlock our genius zone, or come close to it, even in the midst of routines. To help tap into the answers to this question, consider just a few more questions…

  1. What makes you feel most alive?

  2. When was the last time you felt at your best? (Get into details about what was going on at the time. What part of the experience stood out? How did you know you were feeling at your best?)

  3. What are some of your natural strengths? (Think of compliments you may have received or what you naturally gravitate towards.)

  4. What do you remember about your childhood interests, personality, and instincts? (Our childhoods are full of clues and hints about our deeper, authentic self!)

As I explored these questions for myself, I realized I am in my genius zone when I am planning and delivering workshops, teaching classes, providing treatment and therapy for youth, being of service within a setting such as a school or community program, innovating my own business ideas and changing things up often enough, writing, doing research, seeing a project through till the end, and ultimately providing value in areas I’ve experienced and studied. Phew! A bit of a list but I guess this is why I hold on to Momentora no matter how many pot holes come along the way. It’s a challenge and I get to craft my path and infuse all these different components at my own pace.

An important point I’ll add is that sometimes these questions above can also keep you focused on a narrow vision of your potential, because you are relying on past data to inform your future. To counteract this effect, consider adding white space to explore something completely new and dip your toes into a different field or experience altogether. This will keep you fresh and help your mind make new connections to grow and expand your thinking. Sometimes, we continue doing only what we know because we think that’s as good as it can get. But if we venture out just a bit, we can see new perspectives and add something more fulfilling perhaps to our genius zone.
